The founder of Mastertons Coffee and Tea Specialists, Ronald John “Jock” Masterton, born November 13, 1897, came to South Africa from Scotland in 1920 at the age of 23 after serving as an officer in the Black Watch regiment during the First World War.
During the war, a fellow officer from South Africa persuaded him to make a new beginning in the land of sunshine once the war had ended, and he did just that.
Love kept him here. Jock worked as an assistant manager on the farm “Three Rivers” in Vereeniging, where he met his future wife, Marjorie, who at the time was visiting her uncle, the farm manager. The pair ended up moving to Nelson Mandela Bay.
Intending to establish his own business, Jock traveled to Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka), where he studied tea tasting, often sampling more than 400 varieties of tea in a single day. Returning to Port Elizabeth, he opened “The Tea and Coffee House” at 33 Queen Street (now Govan Mbeki Avenue) on December 4, 1924.
Three generations later, Masterton’s remains a family-owned and run business. Husband and wife, Ryler and Nicole Masterton, run the business, supported by James and Sandy Masterton.
“We also have a great team, like a well-made cup of coffee: each member, like each ingredient, contributes to the perfect cup. Just as the right balance of coffee, water, and brewing time yields an exceptional brew, the right combination of skills, collaboration, and effort produces outstanding teamwork.,” says Ryler.
Although the company’s history spans 100 years, focusing on just recent years, they have seen significant growth in its brand and retail footprint by greatly expanding its retail distribution outside the Eastern Cape. Now shoppers everywhere, from Cape Town to Pretoria, can enjoy a mug of Mastertons in the morning, with more exciting developments in the works. Moving from their home of 52 years on Russell Road to their new location in Walmer in 2018 was also a significant milestone for them as a business and family, and in light of the events of the last few years, it was certainly timed well.
“Our coffee is distributed nationwide, found everywhere from supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops to the homes of private coffee-loving individuals across South Africa. For our full range of coffees, visit our roastery at 92 Main Road, Walmer, PE, or shop online for nationwide door-to-door delivery. Alternatively, you can find select Mastertons Blends at retailers around SA, from Checkers, Spar, PnP, and Kloppers to Food Lover’s Market Stores.”
The most iconic Masterton’s blend celebrates the city wholeheartedly: “The Blend of the Bay (coffee created for Nelson Mandela Bay) The Mastertons Coffee Blend of the Bay was created in collaboration with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. The blend was launched to create unique and exciting experiences for visitors and locals of the city while working toward the goal of stimulating the local economy.”
