You can’t stand still when you’re constantly in pursuit of excellence.
-James Masterton, Director of Mastertons
We will be celebrating our 94th Anniversary with the launch of a new roastery in Main Road, Walmer.
With new developments on the rise as well as derelict old buildings dotted all over, the suburb of Central in Port Elizabeth has become a stark contrast of old meets new. But since 1966, one thing has remained constant; the smell of freshly roasted coffee permeating the air – an aroma that is synonymous with our roastery ,ever since Founder, Ronald Jock Masterton, moved to Central after opening “The Tea and Coffee House”, in Queen Street (now Govan Mbeki).
And with a motto that captures the very essence of our family-owned business, ‘Constantly in Pursuit of Excellence”, is the reason why the tough decision was made to say goodbye to a much-loved historical space and move to Main road, Walmer.
Director James Masterton (Son to founder Jock) said it wasn’t an easy decision. “Sentiment obviously played a big part, but with our customers in mind and our future-forward business strategies, the decision to make the move proved to be a wise one.”
Our new flagship store will combine the iconic roastery with the equipment store, formerly located in Parliament street, Central. The expanded offering promises to deliver many firsts, with the introduction of a state-of-the-art coffee bar. Customers will now be able to enjoy an extensive range of drinks from cappuccinos to slow brewed coffee and specialised drinks like, flat whites and cortados.
Director Ryler Masterton (Grandson to founder Jock) said “Main Road, Walmer is fast becoming the boutique business hub of Port Elizabeth, and with the many old buildings, each with their own rich histories, it was the perfect area to relocate to.” He added “Walmer is also more centrally located and will be a far more convenient destination for many of our customers. We felt the expansion would allow us to grow and provide our customers the highest level of service.”
The property at 92 Main Road was built over a century ago and encompasses the character of a Victorian farm house filled to the brim with antique charm.
And just like the suburb of Central, that was home for over five decades, our new property at Main Road, Walmer encapsulates the old and new. Hand roasted blends masterfully created by our father & son team, together with exceptional customer service will be combined with new experiences, including a coffee bar fitted with the finest equipment the industry has to offer. With names like Sanremo, Mahlkönig and other industry leaders, the growing coffee community in Port Elizabeth will have a chance to discover advanced espresso technology. In addition, the new location will offer safer and more convenient parking.
Our new store opens to the public on Tuesday, the 4th December 2018. There will be several promotional activities in store during launch week for customers, including the chance for one lucky customer to win an automatic coffee machine to the value of R17,000.00!
